When the weather does not cooperate, it is hard to entertain the kids during the summer. Parents get sick of hearing I’m bored several times a day. Even after a day at the beach, boredom can set in.

Netflix Highlights for Older Kids
Voltron Legendary Defender (guidance suggested)
This animated series is collaboration between Netflix and DreamWorks. Five teenagers pilot lion mechas which join and form a giant robot warrior named Voltron. Through Voltron, Defender of the Universe, they fight the evil Galra empire.
Pretty Little Liars (parental guidance suggested)
This teen drama is now in its seventh season. Although a teen drama, many adults, including me, find it addictive!
Set in the fictional US town of Rosewood, Pretty Little Liars begins when Alison, the leader of a group of teens, goes missing. Her friends Spencer, Hannah, Aria and Emily try to find her, but they are not sure whether she is still alive. All the while, they are manipulated and threatened by an anonymous tormentor, known as A. After the sixth season, the show moves five years forward and the girls face new mysteries.
The Fundamentals of Caring (guidance)
In this Netflix original movie, we meet Trevor, a young adult with muscular dystrophy. Trevor spends most of his time around the house watching television. Elsa, Trevor’s mom, hires Ben as a caretaker for Trevor. Despite a rough start, a friendship develops between Ben and Trevor.
Ben and Trevor convince Ella to let them take a road trip. The trip shows the funny banter between these characters and what they learn from each other and about life along the way. This movie made me laugh and cry and I highly recommend it.
A Girl Like Her (parental guidance suggested)
Both parents and teens should watch this film for the insight it provides on bullying. In the film, relentless bullying leads high school student Jessica Burns to attempt suicide. While Burns is hospitalized, a documentary crew visits her school because it made a list of the top ten high schools. The documentary crew learns of Jessica’s suicide attempt and their focus shifts to exploring why Jessica attempted suicide.
Before her suicide attempt, Jessica wore a hidden camera given to her by a friend to document the bullying. Video from this camera shows how the popular girls bullied Jessica. The film also looks at bullying from the bullies perspective.
